What type of volunteer work would you look for? And would having a friend or two volunteer alongside you help with motivation?

there's some stuff that's come across the school listservs - working at a senior center helping with web access, children's literacy, reading stories, that sort of thing. i think it would be good for me, since i need stuff like that for my portfolio and since i don't absolutely need a job this quarter.
