"Read the card."
Neville cleared his throat. "Here's something we've been working on. Happy birthday, boys!"
"I suppose this is what it's like having a birthday at Christmas," Harry said. "For most people, I mean."
Neville peered into the box. "So this is meant to be for the both of us?"
"From the both of them, no less. And they're twins! They should know better!" Harry had learned long ago that any gifts from Fred and George should be approached carefully, and ideally with wands up, but this year's birthday offering was so far more confusing than dangerous. "A doll. I don't understand."
"You're afraid."
"Well. Maybe a little bit."
"Fine," Neville reached into the box. "The Hat didn't put me into Gryffindor for nothing, you know."
"I know," Harry said, and stepped back as Neville lifted the doll free. Strings hung from its limbs and - "Hey, there are two in here!"
"Brilliant deduction, mate!" said the doll.
Harry jumped back, and Neville groaned. "We should have seen this coming."
"Seen WHAT coming?" Harry yelled. "Talking DOLLS?"
"Marionettes, actually, and I'd appreciate it if you'd free my traveling companion."
"Just, you know how the twins are." Neville sighed, busied himself untangling the marionette's strings, then held him up. "Go on, Harry. Your turn."
Harry pulled out a second doll who, upon seeing the first, gasped, "Pirate!" and drew his sword.
"Not so much, no. Still the Captain, still Captain Jack Sparrow, but I am, you might say, on sabbatical."
"On sabbatical from St. Mungo's, more like," muttered Harry. He tugged on the second marionette's control bar. "Do you have a name?"
"Turner, sir," he said, eyeing Sparrow warily.
"Maybe we should owl the twins, find out how long the Charm is meant to last," Neville suggested.
Sparrow looked worried. "Would you like a different script?"
"A different script?" Harry looked at Neville, who shrugged.
"We have a few different plots and characters, keep things lively, people entertained," Turner tried to explain.
"Plus," leered Sparrow, "There was this new thing we were working on the box. Lots of time alone in the dark, two men, I'm sure you understand."
"Yeah," said Harry absently. "I mean no! Don't show us. Yes, we. Er. I think I need a drink."
"You and me both, mate," said Sparrow.
"You can drink?" Neville was surprised.
"Best not to think about it too much," Turner suggested.
Harry nodded "Excellent plan. Hippogriff and Child gets all sorts. First round's on me."
