chapter eighteen: moony, wormtail, padfoot, and prongs

[Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs] - Remus

He wonders what would happen if he spoke with them through the Map, whispering secrets and watching the ghostly words appear. Words from versions of themselves, imprisoned in parchment. Alone in the early morning hours he knows, bitterly, that it's only magic.

He knows all of this, and yet he thinks on what to say. There are too many words and yet too few for this house divided. Sometimes he dreams he'd just ask Padfoot, why?

It has only been nine years. Two dead, one shell locked away, and one Dark creature who does not want to know the answer.

can i even say how happy i am to have remus pre-PoA (really, just pre-OotP)right now? i don't know.

it was a different kind of angst, back in those days, and i rather preferred it. one could choose to wallow in those 12 years or to look forward with hope.

and i can read this and roll around in the angstiness of it while thinking you're going to find out, it's horrible, but it's not what you think in a hopeful sort of way and try not to think about what happens next.

thanks, man.

I think it has to be pre-POA, doesn't it? But I love how you don't really know until the last line.

Lovely, Jaci. :)

thank you :)

i'm really glad that we decided to challenge ourselves to not during poa, because it really made me stretch and consider the timelines much more than i would have otherwise. this isn't a time i had thought much about writing in, but now, it's luring me.

thank you :)

Gah, break my heart.

That's such an interesting idea, using the Marauder's Map as a way to "communicate" with its makers. Something potentially dangerous like the Mirror of Erised, you know?

'Tis done beautifully.

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-06-04 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
i just couldn't stop thinking about the way they were then, you know? the arrogant youth versions of themselves. hrm. it's still nibbling at my brains. i guess 100 words wasn't enough to exorcise it.

thank you :)

Oh, Jaci. *sigh* I was actually thinking just today I wanted to read some Remus fic set during this time... when he still thought Sirius was guilty. So many years of it... gah. This drabble is so beautiful and so... ack. I don't even have a word. But it is my favorite of all the ones you've posted for this challenge so far. I keep reading it over and over.

me too! like phin's comment. *points up*

aw, thank you :)

*sigh*

Is it Friday yet?

in twelve hours i'll be at the theater. i think i'm vibrating with excitement right now. omg.

Firstly, I've been reading all of these - wonderful concept.
As to this drabble, it is refreshing, in a way, to go back to PoA-era Remus. It's quite beautiful the way you've shown the map as presenting a quandary for Lupin - how can such anguish be solved by asking a simple question? Love this drabble.

it's such a vital part of him, that i can't believe i haven't thought about it more before this. the whole challenge has got me thinking so much about all of these characters, really got me excited about writing in this fandom. thank you!

Sometimes he dreams he'd just ask Padfoot, why?

I don't think I can say anything. I'm just too stunned.

This is beautiful. Truly beautiful. Poor Remus, all alone of the four *holds him* *sniffle*
