ficlet: out of frame. sirius/remus

[out of frame] - Sirius/Remus for [livejournal.com profile] offscreen
prompt was "old photograph". this was the second bunny – the first one is going in the epic. also, if my boss could stop poking around this desk, that would really help the creative process. movie-verse.

When the owl first came from Hagrid, Remus read it and tossed it aside with the growing pile of Muggle and magic circulars. Photos, Hagrid had asked for, photos for Harry, but photos held Remus’s clearest memories and he was loath to give them up.

One sleepless night as spring wore on, Remus padded out of his room and Summoned the photo albums from a dusty bookcase. They settled softly at his feet as he sat down with a cup of tea. Slowly he looked through the photos, giving full attention to each image, each collection of smiles and waves a deliberate task, a testing of the ache.

The sharpest pain came from the simplest shot, James and Lily dancing in a world their own, the framing slightly off-kilter. Sirius, silent, had snuck up and hugged Remus from behind, startling him just as he snapped the photo. As James and Lily spun, Sirius’s body was warm and strong against him, laughter arrogant and animated in his ears.

Not caring if he was giving joy or removing pain, Remus slipped the photo into an envelope to post in the morning.

Oh, wow, what a perfect look at Remus. This is exactly the way I imagine he would do this: Slowly he looked through the photos, giving full attention to each image, each collection of smiles and waves a deliberate task, a testing of the ache.

Lovely and so sad!

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-07-26 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
yay! i really adore writing remus, so it's lovely to hear it rings true for people. thank you!

This is both beautiful and painful.

Not caring if he was giving joy or removing pain, Remus slipped the photo into an envelope to post in the morning.

That line just about killed me.

My friend. This is so beautiful and sad, I don't even know how to feedback it. I'm just. Wah.

Not caring if he was giving joy or removing pain, Remus slipped the photo into an envelope to post in the morning.

I can so relate to this. Gah.

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-07-26 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
*pets* someday i will write them something happy! maybe. but remus is so pretty when he hurts.

OMG *weeps*

This is terrific. I love the photo of James and Lily from the movie -it's so simple and so moving. I loved Hagrid's gift of photos, too, since it's the sort of thing I totally forgot Harry would have been denied all of his childhood. The connection you make to Lupin, who we don't know at that point in the movie-verse, is perfect, because, obviously, Hagrid would have gone to the Order and to James' old pals.

But I'd never thought of any of these things, and you bring them all crashing together in this ficlet and it's beautiful.

on my last hp reread, i started wondering who exactly other than remus he would have asked for photos. but then for this prompt, at first i was going to use some totally cliched wedding shot or something, but in the nick of time i realized it would be more interesting if the s/r action was entirely . .out of frame. and then i was so delighted that i could use that dancing shot :)

/ramble. thank you :)

You had to wonder what other "old school friends" there were to donate photos, eh?

Very muted, resigned voice. I like it.

i always wondered that! well, maybe not always, but a long time :)
