Ficlet: Out here you can hear things for miles - Remus/Sirius

[Out here you can hear things for miles] - Remus/Sirius
[livejournal.com profile] marauderrhombus-verse for the Less-is-more whatsit. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] musesfool for the suggestion. This didn't go quite the way I intended. It's probably not the way they intended either.

It's another Wednesday afternoon and they're in the van between one crappy gig and the next. James is driving, spinning the radio dial and getting nothing for his troubles but some white noise and the odd call-in show. Remus slouches lower in the bench seat. He prefers the white noise, but he's not the one driving. Sirius is asleep next to him, but he's trying not to think about that. It's not really working. He watches the road, the sky, Peter's toes tapping a drum solo up on the glovebox, and wonders how often James looks in the rear view mirror.

Sirius, in point of fact, is really fucking close. He seems to be taking every bump on the road as an excuse to shift in, edge closer, take up every last cranny of personal space that Remus has left. Another bump, and his head's on Remus's shoulder. Remus tilts to look at him, dark eyelashes, slightly sour breath, body sleep-warm. He turns his head and looks back out the window, toys with the hairbands around his wrist, and snaps them so lightly he can barely hear it. Suddenly a hand shoots out and grabs at his plucking finger. "Stoppit," Sirius says in a voice sleep-deepened. He stretches a little, shifts off of Remus and against a bag of Peter's, but leaves his hand in place, protecting Remus from himself.

James catches Remus's eye in the mirror, and for a while Remus feels safe.

I read this while listening to Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You into the Dark." Complete accident, but perfect mood music for this piece.

*sigh*

Oh. Oh oh oh.

I am completely slain by Remus lately, and this is only pushing me further. I need to reread this whole 'verse. I forgot how much I loved it. But. Gah.

I want to keep talking about this, just because I want to keep thinking about your Remus, but everything I have to say is just ridiculous mush and some drooling.

*sigh*

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
i guess mush & drooling tends to be hard to type. hee :)

i often fear that my remus is a mary sue of the highest order. so. um. i am glad it works anyway :)

Ah, see, I don't think so. I saw a meta post somewhere recently about the popular notion that self-insertion is something to be avoided, where the writer suggested that the reason we tend to write certain characters in the first place is because there are ways in which we identify with them, and what the hell is wrong with that? Well, okay, the wording there is mine, but seriously. What the hell *is* wrong with that?

[identity profile] belovedsnail.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
okay, i just sort of want to paste this whole thing back to you and go "see, that part? it was perfect."

i love how good you are at creating the atmosphere of this world, so that even though i haven't thought seriously about it for ages, it's all so vivid. James and Peter's various ways of fidgeting suit them both so well, ditto the sense of them on the periphery, somehow all detached.

you always get MR Remus so right in ways that amaze me. i'm sort of just waving my hands around trying to describe it. his awareness of everyone in the van and whether James is watching, his sort of island-ness (the way he both sort of likes and sort of can't deal with Sirius's closeness. just. yes. exactly.)

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
the atmosphere of it just is never very far away, i think.

as always, thank you so much :)
