Colin can't stop looking at everything. It's like a fairy story, but he's too old for that sort of nonsense. When the letter came he gave it to his father, and then stood by, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Now he's here, a world away from his father's milk truck and the tall and cruel boys at his old school. He wants to learn about ghosts and flying and food that appears out of nowhere, and he doesn't want to sleep for fear he'll miss something, well, magical. He raises his camera to capture it all for Dennis.

i'm a terrible reader, i realize, and i ignore the minor characters utterly? and you write these things that make me go "OH. oh my god, i never thought about that, and this person really has the potential to be so interesting."
JKR wants us to be annoyed by Colin, i guess, because Harry is annoyed by Colin, so i found him annoying and sort of just kept reading? but this drabble makes him so real and sweet and loveable. it makes him make sense, you know? i'm sort of crinkling my nose with happiness. i'd like to think that the next time i re-read one of the books, i'm going to look at his character differently.

i think it's so exciting to go back and think about things that way, to remember always that we're seeing harry's view of things, so there are all kinds of other facets to these characters that we have yet to discover.
