dorrito's every flavour mood beans

today melinda and i are pleased to begin

the history
lo, so many years ago in fandom time, the unholy union of [livejournal.com profile] anniesj and [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana created mood rings: 132 celebrations of lotrips (which is, unfortunately, flocked at the moment) ETA unlocked now! go! read!

and i looked at that and thought "dude, insane," followed quickly by, "dude, i want to do that." it bopped around in my brain for a while, then [livejournal.com profile] dorrie6 and i did waiting: the prisoner of azkaban drabble project.

but it was finished so quickly. we never really got over it. and so beginning today (because it's the day PoA comes out on dvd . .at least in the states), we're proud to offer dorrito's every flavour mood beans. after this we will never want to write drabbles again, so get 'em while they're hot.

the project
we're doing things a little differently. we have strong opinions about drabbles, so each will be exactly 100 words. as with the poa drabbles, i'll be maintaining a master list of links in this entry.

the list
bold by [livejournal.com profile] dorrie6, italics by [livejournal.com profile] marginalia. [livejournal.com profile] dorrie6's drabbles can also be read via her tag here, and [livejournal.com profile] marginalia's via her tag here.

How many again? This sounds like an ulcer, but kudos to you two gals for taking it on.

This just might inspire me to drabble as well!

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
welcome! i have an indecent love of drabble writing :)

[identity profile] dawn-came-dim.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Striving to write a *good* drabble is like striving to write a poem. It's an art form all its own.

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i like to think so :)

After a hellish 4 weeks of CARMEN, this project is a lovely way to get back into the fandom swing.

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
i asked melinda a while back if anyone had done it for hp yet but i had pretty much decided i didn't care if they had - i wanted us to do it regardless :D

[identity profile] tipgardner.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What a Filibuster's Fantabulous Freaking idea! I'm looking forward to these. Meantime, I'm going to get an early start by reading "Accomplished."

I am holding you in awe right now (so if you, erm, want me to stop holding you, just say so).

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
see, we should have had you around when we were trying to think of a name :)

mmm a little to the left ;)

[identity profile] tipgardner.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Careful...you don't want to encourage LJ stalkage, do you? :)

[identity profile] caerellia.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
PoA came out today in Canada, too. :) *want*

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
some places it doesn't come out until december. as far as my finances are concerned, it might as well never come out. woe.

[identity profile] caerellia.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw. *hugs*

[identity profile] babbled.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck! =)
(and knowing you two, they'll be absolutely brilliant!)

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
aw, thanks!

[identity profile] fruslug.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
So, umm, this is a little weird, but I want to write a drabble and I don't know where to start. Any chance you could give me a gentle nudge, or a startling shove, in the right direction?

[identity profile] dorrie6.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Jaci will probably have her own process to tell you, but I saw this and figured I'd give it a shot.

When I write a drabble, I start with some small thing I want to show or say, something I think I could tell in a small amount of words. When I first started writing them, I usually just wrote the story and then went back and edited for word count, really evaluating each word and whether it was necessary to tell the story, or whether there was a clearer, more concise way of saying something. I'd whittle and whittle until I had 100, and then I'd see if it still worked.

Nowadays I tend to edit as I go, and I find I have to edit less, as I've become used to being economical with words. I find that often an action speaks volumes, and is more powerful than inner monologue or even dialogue. I find that simple statements are stronger than those with a lot of qualifiers involved. Both these things are vital to this type of short storytelling. And the story is the key, really. In the end, you just want to be sure your story is told.

Now that I've typed this it seems really lame. Er. Wait for Jaci.

It actually makes a good deal of sense, and reminds me a little of playwriting. I think I may embark this weekend... Thank you!!

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
all i'd add is that i usually think of drabbles as moments or moods more than stories, and that i almost -never- include dialogue, in part because i hate to write it but mostly because it's inefficient. i've been in many drabble communities, and the ones i hate are the ones that are basically a build-up to a joke. they seem disposable. i try to write ones that have some sort of emotional punch, and so i want the words and the rhythm all to lead to whatever that emotion is.

woo. :)

[identity profile] evalinece.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, these are fantastic! Can't wait for the next ones :)

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i can't wait either - we've written a few ahead to prevent ulcers, and now i'm all anxious to see what people think of them :)

[identity profile] ezzvaldez.livejournal.com 2004-11-28 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What a lovely thing to discover upon arriving back at school at the end of the Thanksgiving break. Yay!

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2004-12-05 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i think i will be dead from drabble when this thing is over ;)

[identity profile] stringy.livejournal.com 2005-02-02 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here from starfishchick's rec - fantastic idea. So far I've especially liked Lockheart's blank, Molly and Arthur Weasley's calm, Narcissa's cold, Alice Longbottom's confused and Hagrid's determined.

[identity profile] marginalia.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
thank you! we're a bit behind of our goal at the moment, but hope to be catching up soon!
